The global incidence of venomous reptile bites is far higher than previously estimated. This is revealed by an extensive international study, which concludes that more than 2.1 million people are envenomed by these animals each year. Of this alarming figure, at least 274,000 patients die, making this medical emergency a serious public health problem in various regions around the world.
The study was led by specialists Dileepa Ediriweera and Anuradhani Kasturuiratne, from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom and the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka, respectively. The results of this detailed statistical and demographic analysis were published Tuesday in the renowned scientific journal PLOS Medicine, providing a new perspective on the morbidity and mortality associated with venomous wildlife.
Historically, snakebites have caused severe illness, permanent disabilities, and death, disproportionately affecting rural communities with limited financial resources. Until now, the clear lack of reliable data in developing countries had made it extremely difficult to accurately estimate the true global burden, concealing the scale of a tragedy that particularly affects tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
To reach these concerning conclusions, the research team thoroughly reviewed clinical literature and medical records concerning incidents in 79 different countries, covering an extensive period. Based on this extensive collection of information, the experts developed various advanced geostatistical models to establish minimum and maximum estimates at both national and global levels.
The resulting calculations paint a bleak picture: the actual number of people envenomed each year could be as high as seven million, with annual deaths potentially reaching 513,000. The poorest countries have the highest incidence rates, with sub-Saharan Africa standing out in particular, accounting for 45% of cases and deaths recorded worldwide.
In light of these substantial figures, the study's authors are particularly emphatic in their final assessment. “Our study suggests that previous estimates of the burden of snakebites may have considerably underestimated the scale of the problem,” they state in the paper. They therefore call for an urgent institutional effort to improve prevention networks and epidemiological surveillance, emphasizing the pressing need to ensure greater access to antivenom treatments and quality clinical care.
In conclusion, the study warns that “snakebite envenoming is a much larger global crisis than previously recognized.” These new and troubling findings provide an essential foundation for health systems to finally develop more effective policies aimed specifically at expanding medical support in low-income regions of Africa and Asia.
