A new study suggests that certain antibodies present in the blood before vaccination may help predict the strength of the immune system’s response. Researchers from the SeroNet program, affiliated with the U.S. National Cancer Institute, analyzed more than 8,000 blood samples from over 4,000 people, including healthy individuals and people with weakened immune systems.
Using artificial intelligence, the team identified antibody patterns associated with stronger responses to the COVID-19 vaccine. Some of these markers, which the researchers called “sentinel antibodies,” were associated with antibodies against microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, respiratory syncytial virus, and human parainfluenza virus type 3.
The findings could pave the way for more personalized vaccination strategies by enabling the early identification of people who are more likely to have a weak immune response. In the future, this information could help determine different vaccines, vaccination schedules, or booster doses, although further studies are needed to validate the clinical application of this approach.
