Researchers at Oxford have discovered fresh evidence that the Shingrix vaccine could have a beneficial impact on heart health. The findings, published in *Nature Medicine*, suggest that individuals who received the Shingrix vaccine experienced a reduction of approximately ten percent in heart problems over a seven-year period compared to those who had been immunized with an older, live vaccine. This decrease in cardiovascular disease risk was also observed in cases of coronary heart disease and heart failure. The study's authors estimate that, if replicated nationwide, this effect could translate to hundreds of thousands of avoided cases in the United States within a seven-year timeframe. While the study's results are significant, they fall short of the protective effects previously reported in observational studies, which ranged from twenty to thirty percent. The Oxford team's approach was designed to minimize bias by focusing solely on data from vaccinated individuals, all of whom had received either the old or the new vaccine between 2017 and 2018. By comparing patient records from over 70,000 Americans, the researchers were able to identify a correlation between Shingrix vaccination and improved heart health.
