These activities, such as running up stairs or carrying heavy shopping bags, can significantly lower the risk of developing cancer. Modern lifestyles often lead to neglect of physical well-being, with many people finding excuses to avoid regular exercise. However, new medical research offers a promising prospect for cancer prevention. According to a report in the Washington Post, just a few minutes of daily activity can produce substantial health benefits. A large-scale study conducted by researchers at the University of Sydney and published in JAMA Oncology found that three minutes of vigorous physical activity per day can dramatically reduce the risk of cancer. This is not about engaging in exhausting workouts or long-distance running, but rather performing small, high-intensity movements throughout the day. The findings represent a significant turning point for public health, as they demonstrate that regular exercise does not require extensive training or athletic ability. The results indicate that brief periods of intense physical activity can trigger fundamental physiological responses, providing a valuable lifeline for those who lead sedentary lifestyles and lack the time or motivation to follow a structured exercise plan. Practical examples include climbing stairs instead of taking the elevator, walking slowly to catch a bus, carrying heavy shopping bags, or engaging in household chores with extra vigor. Even simple activities like playing with children or pets can be classified as VILPA. This approach builds on the principles of high-intensity interval training but applies them to everyday life. By incorporating these energy-boosting activities into daily routines, individuals can overcome the economic and temporal barriers that often discourage regular exercise. The study's findings are not surprising, given the documented impact of these micro-sessions on the body. The research examined the overall incidence of cancers in depth, focusing on a list of oncological diseases closely associated with physical inactivity. Accumulating approximately three and a half minutes of VILPA per day has been shown to reduce the overall incidence of cancers by up to 18 percent compared to those who maintain a completely inactive lifestyle. Moreover, the likelihood of developing the 13 types of cancer most affected by lifestyle is significantly reduced, with a total of four and a half minutes of daily VILPA lowering the risk by up to 32 percent.

The research analysed data from over 22,000 adults in the UK Biobank database, tracking their clinical profiles for an average of almost seven years. All participants reported no formal training or structured sport in their leisure time. To accurately monitor their daily habits, researchers employed sophisticated activity trackers and pulse accelerometers. The use of wearable technology has enabled the accurate capture of every variation in body acceleration and movement, overcoming the limitations of self-reported questionnaires. Being able to quantify the micro-intervals of daily exercise, which are often shorter than a minute, is a significant milestone for preventive medicine. This technical advancement opens up new avenues for scientific research, where previously invisible habits are now recognised as crucial determinants of overall well-being. The data revolutionises our understanding of physical activity, challenging the conventional wisdom that at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week is necessary for good health. For decades, guidelines have focused on this recommendation, which many people find difficult to achieve due to work and family commitments.
