From the laboratory to clinical practice: a course will bring together experts in obesity research in Ribeira

Ribeira will host the next days of September 4 and 5 a translational research course in obesity, under the motto From the laboratory to clinical practice, directed at health professionals who will have specialists in the field.
Experts will focus on how obesity has become a chronic multifactorial disease with metabolic, cardiovascular and social implications.
Ana B. Crujeiras, Luisa M. Seoane, Sulay Tovar and María Pardo, representing the Spanish Society of Obesity, are the organizers of this meeting that aims to deepen the need to efficiently transfer the advances of recent years to daily clinical practice.
This course will allow understanding the emerging biological mechanisms of obesity, interpreting recent translational research and applying new therapeutic and diagnostic tools in their clinical practice.
It is intended, as a consequence, to reduce the gap between the laboratory and the consultation based on evidence and biomedical innovation.
The mayor of Ribeira, María Sampedro, highlighted the dimension of this initiative pointing out that "obesity is one of the major health problems of our society and we believe that public administrations also have the responsibility to support initiatives that allow us to know better this disease and, above all, to make the advances of research have an impact on a better care and quality of life for people".
In this sense, she referred to the importance of having a scientific meeting of these characteristics in the municipality. "We want our city to be also a place where knowledge is generated and shared and demonstrate that science and high-level training can come out of large urban centers and find in municipalities like Ribeira an extraordinary environment for scientific exchange", she said.
The Culture Councillor, Ana Barreiro, said that, in addition to the scientific meeting, there will be a charity gala in favor of obesity research on Friday, September 4, at 20.30 hours, in the municipal auditorium, titled Science and society: bringing obesity research closer to citizens. The entrance will cost 5 euros and Boticaria García and Javier Butragueño will intervene. Alfaia and Alecrín will also perform.
And, once the colloquium is over, the book Women of Iron will be presented. Also, the 0 line will be enabled for those who want to collaborate but cannot attend.
The researcher Ana B. Crujeiras explained that "this course was born with the purpose of shortening the distance between what we discover in the laboratory and what we can do for a person with obesity in the consultation".
"We are probably living one of the most exciting moments in obesity research. For a long time, a very simplified view of this disease was transmitted, practically reduced to eating too much and moving too little. Today we know that reality is much more complex. And we also know that there is no single obesity", said Luisa M. Seoane.
